Around me – that every day I meet artists, performers, students and activists – there is a wonderful community. And I say this truly believing it: the Web is populated by “keyboard lions“, while the world of sex work by so much toxicity. The intersection of the two sets could easily have become a difficult place to inhabit.
I don’t know how, and I don’t know who to thank, my community really does make a difference. Without the wonderful artists I share the stage with at Drama, Milan’s first queer cabaret would never have existed. Without the support of my colleagues, I could never have created the first burlesque school open to all. Without my students I could never have brought to the stage “Burlesque Bodies & Bumps”, the show that puts bodies back at the center of social and political discussion. Without my followers, who interact with me on a daily basis on the issues – often important ones – that I raise on social media, there would never have been a debate on important topics such as sex working, intersectional feminism, sexuality, and gender.
The Rouge family is a nice place of sharing, and because of that, if you’re reading these words of mine and if you’ve come this far, I think you should definitely be a part of it. We are nice, we do cool things, and we have a riot attitude! Here are all the ways you can stay in touch and actively participate in the community:
Host a queer show
Do you have a venue, or know someone who runs one? In the Rouge family there are many talented artists looking for safe spaces and stages above which to shine. On the contact page you will find a contact form. Briefly describe your situation; together we can build something beautiful.
Follow me on social media
It really is the easiest way to stay updated daily on shows, performances, workshops, talks, events. If you need to write me, or tell me your story: write me on Instagram! I personally manage the profile and read all messages that come in.
Actively participate in events
Under the stage, or comfortably seated at the tables of a club is the most direct and fun way to breathe in the allure of burlesque. Among the audience there is fun, friendships are born, sometimes love, taboos are broken down. Check out our events page so you don’t miss a single one.
Give or treat yourself to a burlesque class
Not only will you discover something new about your body, but you will meet many people to share the journey with, and break down fear and stereotype. On Rouge Academy’s profile you will find all the information about upcoming classes and workshops around Italy. Or give a tuition voucher to anyone you want!
